More complete than Rick Steve's, but much less interesting to read. Portugal history in Fodor's is only a page - wish they expand on that. Great coverage of restaurants in Lisbon - I stayed in town for 2 weeks for work eating out every day, and learned to trust Fodor's more than Portuguese local friends as probably Fodor's selection is more suited to American taste. Maps of Lisbon are very hard to follow as they are too small and too geometrically distorted, but this is a problem with all Fodor's books which makes me wonder every time why they cannot just print normal accurate maps but rather pay a designer to mess them up. Some Fodor's guides for other countries are poorly written while others are very good. This one is in the middle of the range.
Street addresses incorrect at times. Maps difficult to follow because they lack sufficient street names to help get bearings. The restaurant reviews are way over the top for what you really get once you arrive. We had no difficulty at all taking taxis. The drivers did not take us for a ride. Over all, this is the most disappointing Fodor's Guide I have ever purchased. In the past I have purchased Fodor guides to Paris, Italy, Spain & Madrid, Dublin, Buenos Aires, Mexico City all very good and reliable. Maybe Fodor's quality is beguining to fade.
Nice thorough book, with many details of the various regions and cities in Portugal. It does include some suggested hotels/restaurants, however I never use the suggested listings, as they're usually VERY touristy. But it does include many other good details, from public transportation, what to expect in the various regions and much more. If you can find it in your local library, save a few dollars and read it that way. My local library didn't have it.
I have traveled to Portugal three times. This book has a great map. A small write up of the sights . The "inexpensive " restaurants have changed over. The 3 star Resturant's are worth going to....
Book was helpful on our trip. I like to purchase an inexpensive travel book and tear it apart. I bring the chapter for where we are visiting each day so I do not have to bring the whole book. Then, I leave it behind at the end of the trip.
Lots of very useful info; great value
We used Fodor's along with Rick Steves for our recent trip to Portugal. The Fodors's book was well organized with good recommendations with detail not included with Rick Steves
