About the Author
I was born and raised in and around New York City. I began my writing career at the age of sixteen when I founded, wrote and edited our school's first Junior Class newspaper. The paper was banned by school authorities after issue number one. Before taking the next step in my literary endeavors, I worked at the legendary Fillmore East, where I was fired twice by legendary rock impresario Bill Graham. During this time I had the privilege of meeting a number of rock stars, such as Rod Stewart and Janis Joplin, none of whom had the slightest influence on my life up until the present day. In 1973 I began writing for the Berkeley Barb, one of America's foremost underground papers. I was their featured writer for almost three years, before finally landing a "real job" working in various fire towers in Northern California. This five-season stint as a fire lookout gave me both the time and the solitude to begin, but never finish, several novels. In 1983 I moved to Mexico where I began at once to write for local English language newspapers. In 2001 I published my first book, Puerto Vallarta On 49 Brain Cells A Day, a collection of satirical stories about my life as an expat struggling with the language and culture of my adopted home. This was followed by Refried Brains and Puerto Vallarta On A Donkey A Day, two more collections of mostly true short stories. Finally, I published my first novel, Slime and Punishment, this year. The response to all my books, but especially, Slime and Punishment, has been truly gratifying. Many readers have called them among the funniest, if not the funniest, books they've ever read. I continue to live and write in Mexico.

This fellow moved to Mexico 20 years ago and must have gradually worked up a bunch of funny stories he told his visitors. Apparently failing to get his novel published he got the idea that he should write the stories. I was not able to stop reading this book.Unfortunately the range of used prices for it today is appalling. I bought it at our library.---Update: The used price for this book jumps all over the place. Buy it when it is down to a dollar or two plus shipping
Enjoyed this before trip to Puerto Vallarta. As entertainment it was great. Would have liked to be a visitor there back in the day.

A great read on the beach in Puerto Vallarta. Funny and well written. Gil seems like quite the hippy from the 60's.
Many times expats think their experiences of living abroad are so interesting that they would make a great book. Unfortunately, not all of them are great authors. And sometimes their life isn't really as interesting as they think it is.My biggest problem with the book is that the main character is almost impossible to like. For instance he tells one story about how he was so drunk he didn't have the ability to resist marrying a 17 year old girl - despite the fact he was already married - then goes to bed with the teenager, vomits on her, and leaves the vomited covered crying girl without a word. As he s driving home he sees / think he sees the body of his teenage bride's boyfriend swinging from a noose and remembers that the boyfriend had vowed to kill himself if the girl's father forced her to marry the author. Why would one want to read about such a horrible person?
PV is an extraordinary place. Visitors, present and future, will benefit from Gil's wacky stories about his adventures in PV.If you've been there, you'll love the vision, texture, color provided from this longtime gringo resident.Regardless, anyone who's looking for a tender laugh will love this book. Enjoy!
Great short stories, funny, witty, and if you go to Puerto Vallarta, you will see that some stories are not fiction...Gevins has a grate sense of humor, and is very smart.
