About the Author
Jan Ledford’s first contact with the eyecare field occurred when she was about 7 years old. (We’ll admit that this took place before eye exams were mandatory for school children, but don’t tell Jan that we told you!) Her parents took her to an optometrist because her dad was very nearsighted. Sure enough, so was Jan. She remembers two things about that incident. First, the eye doctor was very nice because he had a great bag of goodies; if you were good, you could pick out several toys to take home. Second, once Jan got her glasses, she discovered that the trees had leaves and that the neighbors had a TV antenna on their roof. About 2 years later, Jan got her first taste of the writer’s life. She decided to write a book (at age 10!) about a talking hamster. When Mrs. Clark, her teacher, found out about the book, she had Jan read each chapter to the class. After Jan finished, the class applauded. That’s all it took to make her love writing. After entering the world of ophthalmic assisting in 1982, Jan advanced through the ranks until she earned her certification as an ophthalmic medical technologist. She brought with her not only a personal conviction about the importance of good vision, but an overwhelming desire to write. As of the printing of this second edition, she has 12 published books in the eyecare field. Jan lives in Franklin, North Carolina, with her husband Jim, their youngest son (Collin, a college student and music major), and four cats (Munchkin, Boonie Rat, Angel, and Josey Dee). As a freelance medical writer and editor, she runs her own business called EyeWrite Productions. In addition to writing eyecare related material, she has branched into novels and short stories. I purchased this book to help me prepare for my COA exam. It was broken down into the chapters that JCAHPO has on the exam, the heaviest weighted chapters having the most test questions. I feel that by using this book along with the 9th edition of The Ophthalmic Assistant: A Text for Allied and Associated Ophthalmic Personell helped me pass the COA on the first try.This manual phrased the questions almost identically to the questions on the actual exam, and even better, has an answer guide at the end of each chapter explaining why the answer is correct. You can't go wrong buying this book when preparing for the exam.
Some of the question found in the book touched on topics that I did not see in my text book and I find myself researching them and continually learning things I should have known. Any student would be amiss not to purchase this book if they need to do their certification soon.I personally feel that this book is worth every penny that I paid for it and more. This is a must have study guide and I will give another review of this book as soon as I get my certification.
I have to say I came into the ophthalmology industry with no experience, worked for over a year and with another book alone and some notecards I tried passing my COA. Did not pass that the first time around. But then I studied this book and used it as base knowledge and it helped make other given materials CLEAR. I just passed today and am quite impressed with how much this helped me get there
Great book to get ready to take the test. Everything is explained and the questions are the same ones as they ask in the test.
This book was as amazing help for my COA. A lot of the questions in the book were similar to the style questions on the exam. A must get. This helped me pass on the 1st attempt.
Great study tool. I found this book to be similar to the actual test in that some questions were easy and some were harder. I passed my COA so I'm pretty happy with my purchase.
