more of a historical book, lots of interesting stories
Avast ye! Women Pirates Did Exist!!!I had never heard of women pirates. I had never learned about them in school. I’ve never read about one in a history book. It was easy for me to assume that women pirates, seemingly, never existed. That is until I happened across this title: Bold in Her Breeches: Women Pirates Across the Ages. “Women Pirates!!!!†my mind was screaming at me. Why had no one ever told me about them? Oh, of course! It’s because we’ve lived in a patriarchal world for thousands of years. History books are written by the oppressors, not the oppressed.I immediately made my purchase from Thriftbooks.com. Oh how I love used books. One woman’s hand-me-down is another woman’s treasure, and boy was this book gold in my hands. When it finally arrived, I had before me a piece of history, a piece of OUR history, women’s history that I had no prior knowledge of. I would read it. I would learn about the resourceful seafaring female pirates of the world and I would share that knowledge. I wanted to tell all of my friends, all of my family, and most importantly I wanted to share this book with my daughter.I must commend the hard work of Jo Stanley. Her book is filled, crammed pack, with references. This woman has done some serious study, and it all paid off. She tracked down every woman pirate that our poor historical record has ever alluded to. The references to women pirates are practically missing from historical references, so you can only imagine the task of trying to piece together a complete history using only fragments and casual mentions here and there. The detail of the book is amazing. Not only does the reader learn about particular and actual historical figures, but she also learns about the lifestyle of a pirate.If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to live and work as a pirate, what ship life would entail, why anyone would turn to piracy, or any other piracy question you can fathom, then read this book. Jo Stanley answers all of them. This is one of the most informative and enjoyable books I have read on pirates. If you are interested in historically accurate books about pirates and one that focuses on female pirates, THIS BOOK IS A MUST READ.

This is one of the most execrable pieces of purported history I have come across, and I have come across quite a few. If there is no evidence for an assertion however outlandish, assert it nonetheless, claim that it must have been so, and so it was so. Turgid in style, tepid in content, inane in analysis. Do not read it, other than for laughs - it did provoke quite a few not just from me but from friends to whom I gleefully read extracts- and do not buy it. I did, alas.

It seems to be a good overview of the concept of women pirates and their individual stories, or at least how much we do know about each individual pirate, since there are very few records to be found on them. This is more directed towards a popular audience but each chapter does include a great deal of notes and sources as to where she acquired the information. Jo Stanley is a radical cultural worker who has compiled a variety of material usually about women's work and representation. The main contributors to the novel, Anne Chambers, Dian H. Murray, and Julie Wheelwright are all known historians with backgrounds in women's studies.
