I believe this is the first book I've read by Chastity Bowlin, but it certainly won't be the last. I do not normally care for paranormal books, but this combination of paranormal and historical is just perfect and I'm so glad I decided to give it a read. I assume it is considered paranormal because the heroine can converse with ghosts. I'm heading to buy the other two books in the series just as soon as I finish this review!!!!You certainly have an engaging and odd mixture of characters contained within the pages! There is a young girl who was murdered, a psychic, a Duke who many think murdered his wife, a mother who is strange, the villains (of course), a jackaxx of step-father, a sister who can see the future (but it isn't showcased in this book) and wonderful supportive friends. What more could you ask for?Emme is invited, by the dowager Duchess, to a house party at the estate of Rhys, Duke of Briarleigh. The dowager Duchess wants Emme to use her talents to determine the facts surrounding the death of her daughter-in-law. Emme doesn't like to be the center of attention and tries to downplay her talents. However, if the ghosts present themselves, she feels she cannot ignore them and must pass on whatever information she is given.The ghosts present themselves almost immediately and cause Emme to be found in a compromising position. She has been sleep walking and is in absolutely nothing but her thin night rail. When she 'comes to', she doesn't know where she is or how to get back to her room. Luckily Rhys sees her and manages to get her back to her room without anyone else being aware.Rhys is very skeptical and doubting of Emme and would love to show her as a charlatan. However, whenever Emme's life is in danger, Rhys becomes her protector.Rhys and Emme -- along with Rhys' friends, Lord Michael Sutherland, Viscount Ellersleigh, and Spencer, Lord Wolverston -- manage to solve multiple murders while Rhys and Emme fall in love.I'm looking forward to the next two books in the series
While the premise and plot are decent, the style, voice, and poor editing are distracting. This story definitely needed an editor to polish it. The voice is omniscient but switches paragraph to paragraph. One minute you are in the H's head, then the very next line the h's head, and then lo and behold the next line you are in the lead supporting male's head. I wish the author would have stuck with one character for an entire chapter, before switching POVs. Just when you think you have your footing as to whom is even in the room, the scene changes. Days are skipped over. Characters move to different areas without any fluidity as to how they got to the new location. Details are overlooked. Such as clothing that is on, then missing, then suddenly in the way again. The characters get so focused on a relationship and sex that they forget their lives are at stake for a few chapters, despite the fact that they are continually being attacked or inconvenienced with obvious attempts to injure or kill them. It's as if the author took a pause in the story to throw in some sex. I'm all for steamy sex scenes, but this story would have been far better without them. I think this author tried too hard to cram too many concepts and ideas into one story. It reads as if the author sat down, wrote an outline, expanded each idea from the outline, then smooshed them all together with no thought or attention to connecting the sections. (Similar to this rambling review.) There's no need for the random trip to London to make an appearance in society for a week, just to remember that they need to return home and shouldn't have left until they solved two murders (even though they've forgotten that Madame Zuniga's death makes it three murders). Overall, if you are bored with time to waste, are a patient individual, have the ability to gloss over details, and don't have to pay anything to read this story, give it a try. (Note: I only fit two off these categories: the first and last, as this book was free to borrow with Kindle Unlimited. Because I don't fit into the two middle categories, I almost gave up entirely.) If you can accommodate all four categories, proceed to read and enjoy more than I have.
